Get Out of Town
While the city of Geneva offers an abundance of history and culture, inspiration is sure to set in and inspire you to explore the Swiss countryside by car. Switzerland holds a world of splendors to delight the senses, the Lake Geneva region offers the reality that tourists imagine when they dream of an exquisite Swiss vacation. Car Rental driving itineraries are the best way to explore all that this beautiful region has to offer and make the most of your car rental in Switzerland. Driving along lakeside or through the steep mountain passes offers the marvelous opportunity to experience the Swiss country at its most charming and car rental in Geneva is exceptionally easy. For the most comprehensive car rental driving itineraries Auto Europe highly recommends Karen Brown’s Guide to Switzerland. The following sample itinerary suggests areas to explore to take advantage of your car rental in Geneva: Swiss Highlights.

Geneva is a lovely city graced by French influence. Geneva is frequently thought of as a 'new' city-a city of banking and commerce, an international city housing the Palais des Nations, a sophisticated city of beautiful shops, a cultural city with many museums, an industrial city. All this is true, but Geneva also contains one of the most attractive 'old towns' in Switzerland: on the south side of the River Rhône the hills rise steeply and twist and turn in a maze of little shops, fountains, flowers, and charming buildings. This area is crowned by Saint Peter's Cathedral.

Zermatt
Leaving Geneva, retrace your route along the north shore of Lake Geneva. The way has two choices: either a fast freeway or a much slower country road that traces the lake's shore, meandering through the quaint towns lining the lake. Mountains enclose both sides of the valley and on the lower hills, terraced to the water's edge, stretch the acres and acres of vineyards that make this region so well known-the vineyards and the small villages make a beautiful drive. Allow yourself enough time to follow roads that wind down to the villages on the lake and sample some of the region's wonderful wine.

At the east end of Lake Geneva, take a short detour to visit the Castle of Chillon, dramatically perched on its own little peninsula jutting into the lake. After visiting the castle, return to the freeway and continue following the River Rhône as it winds its way down the flat valley. The section of the Rhône Valley between Lake Geneva and the Zermatt turnoff is pretty, but does not have the pristine beauty found so frequently in other Swiss valleys-the road passes through many industrial areas. However, there are countless side valleys and intriguing passes to explore.
