Customs
Travelers are not required to pay duty on an appropriate amount of items for their personal use during their visit. In addition, the following duty-free allowances apply: no more than 1 liter of alcohol or 4 liters of wine; and 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 250 grams of tobacco.
Currency Exchange
As a member of the European Union the Luxembourg national currency is the Euro. About 220 banks of different countries can be found in the capital, which is an international financial center. Hours are 8:30 or 9 a.m. to noon and 1:30 or 2 p.m. to 4:30 or 5 p.m. weekdays, although some banks remain open through lunchtime. Exchange offices at the railway station and airport in Luxembourg City are open daily. ATM machines are readily available throughout the city and generally your bank offers the most competitive exchange rate, major credit cards are also widely accepted throughout the country.
Tipping
A 15% service charge is usually added to hotel and restaurant bills so there is no need for additional tipping. Taxi drivers customarily receive a 10% tip; bellhops and doormen, €1.25-€2.50; movie ushers, coat & washroom attendants, €.50-€1.50.
General Business Hours
Museums: Many are closed Mondays and most also close for lunch between noon and 2 pm. Opening and closing hours vary. The Luxembourg Post is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Restaurants: Lunch is served from noon at least until 2 p.m. Dinner, the day's main meal, is served between 7 and 10 p.m. Shopping: Stores operate from around 8 a.m. to noon and from 2 to around 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Most large department stores are closed Monday morning.
